A scan of my original black and white art from SMILE, page 96, part of the flashback sequence. You’ll notice that I stripped out a lot of the hatching for the book, which was of course printed in color.
This is one of the very few pages I have a good, high-res scan of, that was scanned in grayscale mode vs. black & white lineart mode. Black and white scans are great for getting super-crisp lineart, but grayscale scans pick up more tonal variation in the inks, as well as any remaining pencils or smudges on the page. I did not scan my pencils for SMILE, so those can never be archived. It’s too bad!
